Painless normal delivery

Introduction

Childbirth is often one of the most stressful and painful experiences for a woman. However, with advances in medical science and prenatal care, giving birth can be made less painful for the mother. The process, which is referred to as a painless normal delivery, has been widely researched and tested by gynecologists and obstetricians in recent times. In this article, we will explore the latest guidelines and best practices for painless normal delivery.

Background

Painless normal delivery is a method that aims to minimize the discomfort and pain that mothers experience during childbirth. The traditional method of child delivery, which involves the use of forceps, episiotomy, and other invasive procedures, can cause a lot of pain and trauma to the mother. This can result in long-term physical, emotional, and psychological complications for both the mother and the baby.

According to the latest guidelines for painless normal delivery, the ideal approach involves a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Gynecologists and obstetricians recommend the use of epidural analgesia or spinal anesthesia, which is known to provide effective pain relief without compromising the safety of mother and baby.

Epidural analgesia involves injecting an anesthetic medication called epidural into the region surrounding the spinal cord. This blocks the pain signals from the lower body, providing significant pain relief during childbirth. Spinal anesthesia, on the other hand, involves injecting the anesthetic medication directly into the spinal fluid to numb the lower half of the body.

Non-pharmacological interventions, such as relaxation techniques, massage therapy, and heat therapy, can also be used in combination with epidural analgesia or spinal anesthesia. As per the latest guidelines, these interventions can help to reduce stress, anxiety, and discomfort during childbirth, making the process less traumatic for the mother.

Best Practices

Painless normal delivery is a complex procedure that requires careful planning and execution. Gynecologists and obstetricians can implement several best practices to ensure a safe and painless delivery experience for mothers.

Firstly, prenatal care is essential to identify any risk factors and develop a personalized delivery plan for the mother. Prenatal care should involve regular visits to the doctor, blood tests, and ultrasounds to monitor the health of the mother and the baby.

Secondly, choosing a gynecologist with extensive experience in painless normal delivery is critical. Dr Ankita Mandal, a renowned gynecologist in Kolkata, is one such expert who has years of experience in this field and uses the latest techniques to ensure a safe and painless delivery.

Thirdly, it is essential to educate the expecting mothers about the procedure and the pain management options available. This can help to alleviate their anxiety and prepare them for the process.

Conclusion

Painless normal delivery is a safe and effective pain management technique that can help to provide significant pain relief during childbirth. By following the latest guidelines and best practices, gynecologists and obstetricians can ensure a safe and painless delivery experience for mothers. With Dr Ankita Mandal’s expertise in painless normal delivery, expectant mothers can be assured of a smooth and comfortable delivery experience.

Did you know that women are more prone to urinary tract infections? Women have short urethras, as compared to men. So women are more prone to develop urinary tract infection.

Urinary tract infection is defined as an infection of the lining of the urinary bladder and urethra. A urinary tract infection occurs when infectious organisms enter the urinary tract- usually through the urethra and cause infection. In some cases, the bacterial infection might travel up to the kidneys resulting in kidney infection.

Special situations:

Pregnancy and childbirth:

During pregnancy, the symptoms of urinary tract infection may vary. Sometimes there can be no symptoms at all. This situation is called as “Asymptomatic bacteriuria.”

Early days of sexual activity:

In early days while getting sexually active, women are more prone to urinary tract infection. Some call this as “Honeymoon cystitis”.

Perimenopause/ menopause:

Reduced hormones in the body lead to reduced lubrication. Women in this age group are more prone to urinary infections.

What are the symptoms of urinary tract infection?

  1. Pain in the pelvic region and abdomen
  2. Strong urge to urinate (but may urinate only a few drops)
  3. Urinating more often
  4. Burning sensation while urinating
  5. Unpleasant smelling urine (foul odour)
  6. generalised body pain, fever and fatigue

How is it treated?

UTI is normally treated with antibiotics. In severe cases intravenous antibiotics may be needed. Painkillers can help relieve pain.

What are the preventive measures?

  1. Drink plenty of water to help flush out bacteria from your excretory system.
  2. Drink cranberry juice. The juice is scientifically proven to treat as well as prevent UTI by preventing disease-causing organisms from sticking to the walls of the urethra.
  3. Have plenty of vitamin C rich foods. Vitamin C improves the immunity and helps the body fight the infection.
  4. Practice good restroom hygiene. Take extra care during menstruation.
  5. Wear loose clothes. Prevent excessive sweat in that area.
  6. Special care while lovemaking: Urinate soon after having sexual intercourse to flush out organisms that may have reached the urethra. Also, wash the area with water thoroughly after having intercourse.

Preventing cancer of uterus

Different parts of the uterus can get affected by cancer. The endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus. Cancer that originates from endometrium is called as endometrial cancer. It usually affects the middle-aged women.  It is more common in women having obesity, diabetes and hypertension. Uterine cancer may need following methods for treatment:

  1. Surgical removal of the uterus along with ovaries, lymph nodes and fallopian tubes
  2. Radiation therapy
  3. Chemotherapy

It is obvious that the treatment options are not easy. Hence it is better to prevent the cancer or detect it in early stage itself. You cannot control the genetic or heredity factors related to the cancer. But other things can be controlled. Here are simple things that you should do:

  1. Control body weight: Keep your body weight in control. Obesity can pose a huge risk of getting affected with uterine cancer. The fat in the body produces estrogen, which promotes the growth of uterine lining that is the Endometrium and may lead to
  2.  Breastfeed: Endometrial Studies have shown that those mothers who breastfeed the babies for 1- 2 years have less chances of uterine cancer..
  3. Treat abnormal bleeding: If you are suffering from any type of abnormal bleeding, be it heavy periods, bleeding even after you reached menopause or if you start bleeding between two menstrual cycles, consult your doctor immediately. Abnormal bleeding can be a symptom of endometrial hyperplasia, which might eventually turn cancerous.
  4. Exercise: As already said earlier, keep your weight under control to avoid uterine cancer. Exercise to avoid obesity. It also balances the hormones in your body.
  5. Healthy food:  Eat a healthy and balanced diet every day to be fit and bouncing.
  6. Birth control pills: Most women feel that birth control pills cause cancer. Actually, birth control pills help to keep uterine cancer at bay.

So eat healthy, exercise and adopt healthy habits. Then nothing can stop you from enjoying life to its fullest.

HOME PREGNANCY TESTS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

There are always questions around home pregnancy tests which we have tried to answer here.

When to do a home pregnancy test?

The best time to do the home pregnancy test is immediately after you missed the period. In the first few days after the missed period, it is advisable to take the test with the first-morning sample of the urine but a week later you can do it any time of the day.

It is not a good idea to do the test before you miss a period because you could still be pregnant and yet the test may be negative as the hormones are just entering into the blood circulation. Te levels may be too low and not detected.

For those who have irregular periods then you should check three weeks after your intercourse because the test will take at least two to three weeks to be positive once you have conceived.

When to do the home pregnancy test after a termination/abortion?

After a medical abortion is done, the patient is keen to know that the tablets have worked, and the process of abortion is successful. It is quite common for them to do a home pregnancy test to know that it is negative.

The home pregnancy test should be done only three weeks after the abortion because though the tablets have a very good success rate and the patient may have aborted, the level of the hormones is very high in the blood and it will take some time for it to be cleared from the blood through the urine. Therefore, the urine test will be positive, and the hormone will be detected in the blood and in the urine for as long as up to three weeks and sometimes even longer. It does not mean that the abortion process has failed. It just means that the body takes some time to clear the hormone from the system

How do home pregnancy tests work?

The Urine is used to detect the pregnancy hormone. Various ready to use kits are available in the market and are very user friendly. They give results within a few minutes.

Once the ovum and sperm fertilize then embryo is formed. The embryo implants into the uterine wall and attaches itself. The implantation process happens around the time when you were expecting your periods but you have missed it.

Once the implantation happens, the pregnancy releases the pregnancy hormone which is the Beta Human chorionic gonadotropin (beta HCG) into the circulation. It is detected in the urine. This hormone is not detected in any other situation and therefore it is used to detect a pregnancy.

How to interpret the result from the home pregnancy tests?

Most kits have a well with a mark C and T

First one puts a few drops of urine in the well marked for urine.

Within a few minutes a line appears on the mark C.

This confirms that the kit is valid and functioning.

If there is a line on the mark T, then the test is positive and it confirms that you are pregnant.

If there is no line on the mark T then the test is negative and you are not pregnant.
